A Valentine for You by ~JaceyRae:iconJaceyRae:

A collection of World Ends With You drabbles with a common storyline. Most are pairings, but anything involving Rhyme is not a pairing.

“That way,” the professor droned, “you can tell whether or not the triangles are congruent.”
Math class on Valentine’s Day generally caused the students to get restless, especially when it was the last class of the day.
Neku Sakuraba looked over at his friend Shiki Misaki, motioning to the teacher with his head and making the universal sign for blabbing with his hand.
Shiki held up a finger: wait for it. She dug into her knapsack, finding a black newsboy cap with gold embellishments. She, Neku, and their other friend Daisukenojo “Beat” Bito took turns wearing it whenever there was a math exam—it was their lucky hat in that respect, as its previous owner was an arithmetic ace. Shiki put the cap on, motioning to the teacher before pantomiming yelling into a megaphone.
Neku collapsed onto the floor with laughter.
“Mr. Sakuraba!” the professor droned. “What is so humorous?”
“Nothing,” said Neku. Of course he wouldn’t suspect Shiki—they were using a joke that no one without experience in the Underground world of the dead would ever get.
The bell rang before Neku could earn any punishments, and he and Shiki charged out of the room.
“Are you planning to give anyone chocolates today?” Neku asked.
“I don’t know,” said Shiki, adjusting her glasses and putting a thoughtful finger on her lip.
“Yo, Neku!” Beat ran up behind Neku and cuffed him playfully on the shoulder. “Waitin’ for those chocolates to come rollin’ in?”
“For you, maybe. I don’t know if you forgot, but I spent the majority of my life staying away from other people. That includes any girls that might have wanted to give me any chocolates.”
“Well, I’ve gotta get going,” said Shiki.
“I’ll be heading home too,” said Neku. “I have to study for the next math exam.”
“Take the hat,” said Shiki. “It’ll help.”
“You gonna study tonight, Beat?”
“Nah,” said Beat. “Got it all up here, man!” He tapped his head. “I’m a regular fountain of wisdom when it comes to tiggernometry!”
Neku silently contemplated that phrase as Shiki said, “Um, Beat…I think you should have the lucky hat while you study for the test, okay?”
“Thanks, Shiki! Won’t need it, though! Neku might. Give it to him.”
Shiki handed Neku the hat and went running off as Beat waved to a newcomer. “Yo RHYME!” he called to his sister. “’Sup?”
“Hi, Beat!” Rhyme greeted. “Hi, Neku! I wanted to give you these before you left school! I got you both chocolates for Valentine’s Day!”
Neku smiled as he took the box Rhyme handed him. “Thanks, Rhyme.”
“Yo, Rhyme, you the best!” Beat added, cramming chocolate into his mouth. “It’s a party in my mouth!”
“I’m glad you like them,” said Rhyme. “Now I’m just going to drop off one more!”
As Rhyme walked away, Neku asked, “Who’s her third friend?”
“Probably some guy from her class,” Beat said around his mouthful of candy. “But I swear, if she’s got a boyfriend I don’t know about, I’ll beat ‘im to a pulp! Anyway, Neku, I gotta bounce! Good luck studying croculus!”
Beat skated away on his board, leaving Neku to smack his head. “You’re gonna need a lot more than a lucky hat.”

“Are you sure, Ai?” Mina asked.
“I’ve never been MORE sure,” Ai said. “There’s never been anyone MORE wrong for me than Makoto. He’s too quiet and nervous. And when he was confident, he became a total jerk! He needs someone sensitive like him. I need someone more exciting. And to tell you the truth, Mina…I have a crush on someone else.”
“Really!”
“I’m planning to give him chocolates today.”
“Ai…do you remember when we were playing Reaper Creeper, and the Reaper told you I had a crush on somebody?”
“Yeah?”
“Well, Ai, the thing is…I didn’t want to tell you then, given the circumstances, but I’m going to give chocolates to…”

“Aw, thanks, Nao-Nao!” Sota cried, opening his box of chocolates.
“I made them just for you, hon!” Nao said, stroking Sota under the chin. “I wouldn’t have picked a different partner, ever!”
“Man, am I glad you got your second chance at life.”
“But it wouldn’t have been any fun if I didn’t have you to give this to today! We had to come back together!”
They embraced and kissed.
“OUTTA THE WAY, LOVEBIRDS!”
Beat tore through the street on his board, causing Sota and Nao to jump to opposite ends of the street to accommodate his travels. He put on the brakes in front of Mexican Hot Dog. “Even after those chocolates, I’ve still got the munchies…”
“Oh, hey, Beat!” Ai cried, waving to him. He waited for her to catch up. “Imagine running into you here!”
“’Sup, Ai? You wanna come in for a bite?”
“Sure thing!”
“Ai, what’s that box in your hand?”
“Well, I…”
“Are those chocolates for someone special?”
“BEAT!”
“Sorry, sorry, yo. None of my business.”
“But yeah…they are.”
“Lucky guy there. I hope he feels the same way about you.”
“Beeeaaaat…”
“What? What’d I do?”
“These chocolates are for YOU! I like YOU!”
“Oh!” Beat’s face flushed red to match Ai’s. “Hey, uh…that lucky guy kinda does feel the same, if you were wondering.”

“YESSSSS!” Shooter Dan danced around the Tin Pin board to celebrate his victory. “Who wins yet AGAIN? I do! I do! No one stops Red Kaiser!”
“Hi,” said a beautiful redheaded girl from the crowd. Shooter knew her from school, but couldn’t come up with her name. He remembered seeing her cheer wildly when he won.
“Don’t tell me…” he said, holding his temples while he thought hard.
“Eri,” the girl answered. “I’m Eri. You might have seen me hanging out with Shiki Misaki?”
“Oh yeahhh! You’re cool clothes girl! I should’ve known by the outfit you have on today. What brings you down here to the Valentine’s Day Slam-Off?”
“I just wanted to cheer for one of my favorite slammers. You’re really good, you know.”
“I gotta be! Tin Pin is my life! See this band-aid? That’s where a pin flew off the board and stuck me in the face once. Just pulled it right out and kept on playin’. I’m not called the champ for nothing! I AM A SLAMMURAI!”
“I’d like to learn how to play sometime.”
“Hey, how about I teach you? I can make you as good as me! I bet you have some good pins at home already…I mean, since you obviously hit all the good stores to get those cool clothes.”
“Actually, Shiki makes most of my clothes, but I do have a few pins…I’ve always seen you around, but I’ve never gotten to talk to you before.”
“Yeah?”
“And I’m glad I did,” Eri concluded. She handed Shooter a white box. “Here. They’re chocolates. I made them for you.”
“Aw, thanks!” Shooter took the box fondly. “I’m glad I talked to you too! Hey, how about we go start your first Tin Pin lesson?”
“Sure thing!”

Rhyme’s footsteps echoed on the stone of the station underpass. She stopped before the sewer grate that led to Shibuya’s underground.
She lay the third box of chocolates there. “Hello?” she called. No answer. “Sorry to bother you,” she went on, “but I remembered someone lived here…a boy who used to be friends with my brother and Neku. He helped save them, and me too. I just wanted him to have these as a thank you.”
Still no answer from the Shibuya River.
“I’ll just leave them here in case you want to come up and get them,” she said. “Thanks again for helping save me and my brother. I really appreciate it!”
She left the station underpass, satisfied that she had delivered to all her friends.

“Hi, Makoto,” Mina said, catching up with the young man after the workday had ended. “How’s business?”
“It’s tough, but rewarding. The way it should be. How have you been, Mina?”
“I’ve been great! School is going well, and I have an exam coming up, and…” Her voice got soft. “It’s Valentine’s Day…”
“Have you given your chocolates to someone special?”
Mina blushed. She knew sometimes Makoto talked to her like a parent to a child, because he was in the work world and she in school, but he was really only a year older than her. “Not yet, Makoto. I want to, but I’m afraid he doesn’t think of me like that. I’m afraid he thinks of me like a child.”
“Mina, you’re a bright young woman. I don’t think anyone could see you that way.”
“Are you sure, Makoto?”
“I’m sure, Mina.”
She handed him the box. “They’re yours, Makoto. I…”
“Mina!” Makoto gasped. “I never knew! I thought…I mean, you got tickets for me and Ai to go out, I didn’t know you…”
“I knew how much she liked you, so I made the sacrifice for our friendship. I didn’t want to cause drama. But she likes Daisukenojo Bito now, so I thought…”
“Mina, Mina!” Makoto took Mina under an arm, turning pink. “Ai’s a great friend, but I wasn’t really interested in her. So we kind of went our separate ways. When you first got those tickets, I was hoping YOU would ask me.”
“Makoto!”
“Let’s make up for it, okay? There’s going to be a Def Märch concert tomorrow night at A-East. They say they’re trying a new direction…something called ‘megaphone rock’…although I think they spelled it MëgaPhone Rawk. Let’s go together, just you and me!”

The sun had set, and Neku pored over his textbook. Even while wearing the lucky cap, it was hard to absorb it all.
A knock came at the door: a welcome distraction from studying. He opened it. “Oh, hi, Shiki.”
“Hi, Neku.”
“What’s up?”
Shiki scratched the ground with her foot. “It’s hard for me to say,” she mumbled.
“Go ahead. It’s just me. I’m listening.”
She looked up into Neku’s face. “Neku…I…these are for you and I made them myself!” she cried, shoving a box of chocolates at him.
Neku took the box, staring at it incredulously.
“But I’m sorry if you think it’s awkward!” Shiki yelled, waving her hands in a panic. “I just…after all we’ve been through, I realized that I feel…that you…ah!”
“Shiki,” said Neku, “there’s something I’ve been meaning to tell you.”
“What?”
“I never understood your entry fee.”
“Oh. I mean, I thought I told you…I was jealous of Eri, and I wanted to be beautiful like her, so—“
“But you’re beautiful NOW, Shiki. Why would you want to change?”
Shiki blushed. “You really think I’m beautiful?”
Neku leaned forward, kissing her cheek. “Yeah. You don’t have to stand on the doorstep all night. Why don’t you come in? We could study together.”
“That…that’d be great!”
She came in, sitting close to Neku in the study, and they pored over the textbook together, catching each other’s eye and sticking the lucky cap on Mr. Mew as a joke.

Ken Doi rubbed his eyes during the last hour of business at Ramen Don. The restaurant was dead except for the pair in the corner, but looking at them reminded him that he was getting old, getting tired for the night, and probably in need of new glasses. He could have sworn that every time he looked at them, he saw WINGS coming out of their backs. He served them the ramen the young lady had ordered and then left, shaking his head to clear it.
“So, Uzuki,” Koki Kariya said, putting his boots on the table and teetering backward in his chair. “An RG restaurant. Odd choice.” He put his lollipop in his mouth and sucked it thoughtfully.
“Hey, it’s not my fault!” Uzuki Yashiro growled. “This was the only place that served what I wanted!”
“What did you order?”
“Look for yourself.”
Kariya set all four legs of the chair on the ground, looking at the ramen dish on the table. “Chocolate ramen?”
“There was a meme accident that caused this guy to come up with dessert ramen. I figured I’d take advantage of this since I can’t make chocolate worth crap.”
“Really, now? And what put you in the mood for chocolate?”
“You stupid…did you forget what day it is?”
“Remind me.”
“ARRRRRGH!”
“Uzuki…this is getting nowhere.”
“It’s VALENTINE’S DAY, okay! You know, where the girls make chocolate for the guys they care about, and buy chocolate for their male acquaintances? I wasn’t just about to BUY chocolates for you! I did that for the Composer already…I threw them at his fat head. But I can’t make anything in the kitchen without blowing it up…God, if Higashizawa was still alive to cook for me, I wouldn’t have this problem…so I marched us down here to get you the next best thing!”
“Dessert ramen? Wait…does this mean I’m one of the acquaintances, or…”
“Does this answer your question?” Yashiro switched sides of the table, sitting next to Kariya. In one swift, sharp movement, she grabbed him around the waist and planted a long kiss on his cheek.
Taken aback and blushing, Kariya bit down on his lollipop, and it shattered in his mouth with a CRUNCH.
“Curses!” Ken Doi yelled. “Now I’ll NEVER figure out how many licks it takes to get to the center!”

All my favorite pairings that I have not yet written. Plus Rhyme being nice to all the guys. (She's too young for a pairing, plus, Beat would beat the snot out of the unlucky guy.)

Yeah, I got converted to NekuShiki. What did it was that a) the Dessert Ramen scene in Shadow Ramen proved that NekuMina was no possibility and b) Shiki was Neku's MOST VALUABLE THING for the entry fee. I mean, obviously he had Beat as another friend, and Reaper or no, they still could have taken him. They could have taken Beat and Shiki and said, "We took the thing you value most--your friends." But no, it was Shiki.

Minamimoto's cap is still floating around. He's like Demyx: can't do a fic in his fandom without referencing him.
Plus, Shiki uses Minamimoto impressions to mock the math teacher.

My friends and I all have ongoing arguments about how old Makoto is, so don't yell at me for that, please.

Did I have to make the Tootsie Roll Pop slogan reference? Yes. Yes I did.

No, nononno, it is not Rhyme/Joshua. It is Rhyme + Joshua friendship. I prefer Rhyme/no one and Joshua/Kitaniji.
